Greetings from Connecticut, the Nutmeg State. We offer
genealogy services in the greater New Haven CT area (list of towns.) State lore has it that shrewd Yankee peddlers foisted carved
wooden nutmegs on unsuspecting housewives. Wood was cheaper than
real nutmeg. That is how Connecticut came to be known as the Nutmeg
State.
During the American Bicentennial celebration in Connecticut, planners thought about handing out wooden nutmegs as souvenirs. Ironically, this time the real nutmegs turned out to be cheaper!
